Forty Canadian soldiers. Six nuclear bombs. One secret.
In the spring of 1957 at the height of the Cold War, 40 young Canadian soldiers were sent to Nevada on a top secret mission – to serve as guinea pigs for the military in a nuclear test field. They played war games less than 1,000 metres way from detonated test bombs four times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima.
Several veterans fell victim to radiation, and children were born with birth defects. Today, 50 years after being exposed to dangerous nuclear radiation, the few soldiers who survived are fighting for justice. And Ottawa is trying to bury the affair.
Produced by Guylaine Maroist and Eric Ruel, "TIME BOMBS" turns a spotlight on this embarrassing and controversial page in Canadian military history. A team of journalists traced the few survivors of Operation Plumbbob. The documentary’s makers also tracked down never-before-screened film records of American nuclear tests involving soldiers. Using these stunning records, "TIME BOMBS" helps us relive the soldiers’ incredible experience.
In this real-life thriller, we follow (Calgary resident) Jim Huntley, as he puts his case to the government and confronts the politicians who are trying to dampen their efforts. As the controversy gains media attention, will policy makers listen to the plights of these veterans?
A non-profit, local citizens group is working with the Canadian Atomic Veterans Association to continue to make Canadians aware and to urge the government to settle their class action suit with these Veterans.
Montreal producer Guylaine Maroist will be in attendance for two Showings of "TIME BOMBS" and will speak to the audience.
