A three part presentation about the story behind Calgary's Stones of Signal Hill, the letters of WW1 Soldier David Argo, stationed at Calgary's Sarcee Camp in 1915, followed by the story and legacy of Peace Keeper Mark Isfeld.
Rememberance Day Program
This presentation consists of three real life stories with the Canadian
Soldier theme, using music and PowerPoint with actual photos of our
soldiers, courtesy of the Museum of the Regiments as well as photos
taken by Mark Isfeld during his Peace Keeping tours. The Stones of Signal Hill, slideshow, explains how this famous landmark, located in SW Calgary, was saved as a Heritage site and why.
WW1 soldier David Argo, trained at Sarcee Camp located at the base of
The Stones of Signal Hill in 1915. Excerpts from his letters from the
front to his wife Mae back in Calgary, provide insights into the life
of a soldier.
The third segment of this presentation is the story of Mark
Isfeld, a Canadian Peace Keeper, and combat engineer, who felt a need
to do something for the children. He began distributing hand crocheted
dolls his mother made back in British Columbia, to children he met in
war torn countries. After his death while on duty in Croatia in 1995,
the dolls continue to be freely given by our Peace Keepers and are now
known as the Izzy Doll. Along with some of Mark's photography and
excerpts from his letters the students learn about the life and role of
the Peace Keeper in the 1990's.
