Anne is back at work and Allan has the day off so he and Bob take me to
Dundee, to see the the railway bridge of the 'Silvery Tay' River.
About 118 years ago a passenger train fell to its grave taking all on board
with it, when the stanchions gave weigh. We walked the stone walkway, the smell
of seaweed and seagull songs a reminder of the North Sea over our shoulder.
We went to see the Discovery Ship, once sailed by Captain Robert Scott to the
South Pole. Another relic ship The Unicorn sits on display -
launched in 1824 boasting 46 guns and resembling a pirate ship. The oldest
British built ship - still afloat. A unicorn adorns its bow (the front of the
ship?)
Bob and Allan pose in front of Desperate Dan and his cartoon sidekicks
popular in the 'funny pages' in Scotland.
From the scenic viewpoint of Dundee Law, we can see 3 ridges,
Sidelaw Hills, the
Grampians, and in the distance the Schiehallion (She-hal-lion). Ann and Allan
are 'Munro Baggers' which means they enjoy the national pastime of trying to
hike every Munro in Scotland. (A 'munro' is a hill 3000 feet or higher)
Heather Innes is a Scottish singer who just got back from a tour in Canada
and northern USA. She arrives at noon directly from the airport to pick me up
from Annes, on her way home. I will stay with her tonight. I pack my bags and a
Suzuki guitar Anne has loaned me during my Scotland stay.(wow, eh!)
Heather has agreed to be my driver for most of my stay in Scotland and
perform with me whenever the opportunity comes up. Tomorrow, we are off to the
Isle of Mull, where we will take photos of Calgary Bay (our namesake) and
present The Scottish Canadian Connection at the Tobermory School in Tobermory.
(on Sept 17 we pick up Ciaran Dorris and head for Aberdeenshire to present in
schools there)
Heather and Allan (another Allan) are warm and friendly and again we take the
scenic route across Sidelaw Hills, a 40 minute drive to their cottage near
Blairgowrie called Auld of Clunie. What is so coincidental (do,do,do, do,do, do
- add spooky music here!) is that my friend Joyce's mom, and sister live in the
Blairgowrie area. Just minutes from the singer Heather, who was suggested to me
by Red Barn Studios.
Heather is knackered(exhausted) from the travelling but she is chuffed
(overjoyed) to be home and quickly finds Twilights and Hope - her cats are
chuffed to see her too!
